Cliff honey (aka mad honey) is a rare himalayan honey harvested from cliffside hives in the Kanchenjunga region, home to mt. Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain at 8,586 meters (28,169 feet) and renowned as the global center of rhododendron diversity, with more than 32 native species.
This honey is collected once a year in spring by skilled gurung honey hunters, using traditional rope-based harvesting methods practiced for generations. The bees forage heavily on wild rhododendron blossoms, whose nectar naturally contains grayanotoxins.
In small amounts, these compounds contribute to the honey’s distinctive character and its long-standing psychoactive, medicinal, and ceremonial significance in himalayan cultures, where it was historically regarded as a sacred medicine.
Important note: cliff honey is best consumed in small amounts at one time, especially for those unfamiliar with wild himalayan honeys.
This honey is also valued for its antioxidant qualities and cultural heritage, while supporting sustainable livelihoods and traditional ecological knowledge within local mountain communities.
Origin: Nepal
